Today's Verses and Selena vs. Maynard

Today's Verses - So this website will read you the verses if you click on the speaker box above the text, WITH BACKGROUND MUSIC!! Epic.

Genesis 5:1-7:24
Matthew 3:7-:11
Psalm 3:1-6
Proverbs: 1:10-19

So do we think that all these guys from the Bible (and gals) lived to be 700, 800, 900 years old? Did they perhaps have a different method of counting years lived? I mean, Adam didn't have his first kid until 130. Just saying.

Okay, JK. Keep reading into chapter 6, Eric.

The Great Flood - I've seen documentaries that contemplate whether or not the flood really happened or if a river flooded the area that Noah lived. I think the problem is that there is no record in any history book and they have yet to find a place on Earth with geological evidence that a great flood happened. Guess this is one of those faith things.

The first speech made by John the Baptist in Godspell - "You brood of vipers!" John telling metaphors about trees being chopped down and cast into the fire. John baptizing Jesus. Jesus being tempted by the Devil - that must have SUCKED!

Psalm: David singing God's praises to God, but fleeing from his son Absalom (not sure I understand that part).

Proverbs: More "common sense" to people that needed it. Don't steal and kill, for it is bad.

Selena vs. Maynard

Okay, this cannot go on much more longer. We have to talk about pop music and how awful most of it is. Now before you delete my blog off your reading list, let me say this: Not all rock music is that great either (the music I choose to listen to), but at least there are multiple people playing musical instruments together. The same almost never applies to  pop music.

Let's start today with lyrics and not even go into musicality. I was listening to a top 40's station the other day (or rather, I was driving while my wife was listening to a top 40 station) and this "song" came on the radio. I couldn't understand a word that was being "sung" and the chorus had 8 words repeated over and over again. Of course, Kat knew exactly who it was before I even had a chance to process what I was hearing. The song was Love you Like a Love Song by Selena Gomez. This was my reaction: about 30 seconds of listening to the chorus, then saying, "it's so shallow, it's deep."  I posted the lyrics below so you can read the awesomness that is Selena Gomez. I only did the first verse and chorus because you don't need much more than that to get my point.

Love You Like a Love Song - Selena Gomez

It's been said and done
Every beautiful thought's been already sung
And I guess right now here's another one
So your melody will play on and on, with best of 'em
You are beautiful, like a dream come alive, incredible
A centerfold miracle, lyrical
You've saved my life again
And I want you to know baby

[Chorus]
I, I love you like a love song, baby
I, I love you like a love song, baby
I, I love you like a love song, baby

And I keep hittin' re-peat-peat-peat-peat-peat

I, I love you like a love song, baby
I, I love you like a love song, baby
I, I love you like a love song, baby

And I keep hittin' re-peat-peat-peat-peat-peat

I think my favorite line out of what is posted above is " a centerfold miracle" WHAT! Is she even old enough to look at Playgirl? (or Playboy, whatever floats her boat, no judgement here). Then there's the chorus. "I love you like a love song." I want you to REALLY think about that line. Seriously. Try and make sense of that. Go... ... ... ......I love you like I love a love song or I love you like a love song? See what I mean, it's so shallow, it's deep. My brain hurts. I think the worst part is that this single is number 27 in the US this week and has been on the charts for 12 weeks. Ugh. I just wanna barf.

Substitute drinking with listening to Selena Gomez's "Love Song" all night. I thought the rainbow part was funny though.

Let's compare her lyrics to the A Perfect Circle's song "Weak and Powerless"

Tilling my own grave to keep me level
Jam another dragon down the hole
Digging to the rhythm and the echo of a solitary siren
One that pushes me along and leaves me so

Desperate and ravenous,
So weak and powerless over you

Someone feed the monkey while I dig in search of China
White as Dracula as I approach the bottom

Desperate and ravenous,
So weak and powerless over you

Little angel go away
Come again some other day
The devil has my ear today
I'll never hear a word you say
Promised I would find a little solace
And some peace of mind
Whatever just as long as I don't feel so

Desperate and ravenous,
So weak and powerless

Desperate and ravenous,
So weak and powerless
Over you

Contrast to Gomez's, this is the entire song's lyrics and the audio is twice as long (that should tell you something right there about the actual music). The man behind A Perfect Circle is Maynard James Keenan, who also happens to be the frontman for Tool. If I had to guess, I would say the lyrics are intentionally deep (he may or may not have written them while under the influence of "stuff", IDKDR). I would also guess that there is some kind of political undertones here as well, but I didn't have enough time to Google the lyrics to find out. If you know more about this song, or look it up, please feel free to leave a comment.

I will say this, Maynard is 48 and Gomez is 20. Maynard may have a little more to sing about as he is twice her age. But at 20, I know I was thinking some pretty heavy stuff (without the influence of "stuff" mind you) and when I wanted to tell someone I loved them, I at least tried to find deeper words than I love you like a love song.

Until next time, dear readers...

I'd say he's digging for China and he may be able to feed himself
